When it comes to reality TV, I am an absolute addict. I love pretty much everything about it, from the concepts to the sob stories to the outfits. Not gonna lie, one of my favourite things about reality TV is the instant fame that often follows. I know this is a touchy subject as lots of people see it as undeserved and ridiculous, but for someone like me who desperately wants to be rich and famous and have everything that that lifestyle has with it, but no obvious talent to get me there, reality TV often seems like the only answer.
Moving on: Susan Boyle.
She has had a LOT of negative attention. She's had abuse thrown at her as people pass her in the streets and she has also been subject to verbal attacks by the media in more private areas, making her vulnerable and apparently extremely upset and frightened. I think this is absolutely disgusting. It's awful when any celebrity, new or old falls victim to this, but it somehow seems much worse when the person having to cope with this is as talented as Susan Boyle. I really do believe that she is a revelation not for only this country, but for this whole era we are living in. We live in a world where as a rule, success comes hand in hand with beauty, a stunning figure or at the very least, charisma. We do not live in a world where success comes as a result of sheer talent, and we know this because SO MANY people audition for bands and films and plays and get told, "Come back when you've lost some weight." Susan stood on that stage and everyone laughed at her. Surely after she proved that she had sheer talent people should have stopped laughing at her? So many haven't.
It's absolute jealousy. It's jealousy because thousands of fat and ugly people are bitter that they couldn't do what she's done. And it's also fear. Susan getting to where she is right now has shown the world that maybe we're not as superficial as we were originally thought to be. And whereas some people think this is brilliant, others are scared because it's shown that times might be changing. People are not in their comfort zone anymore because something that we've taken for granted for so long (that looks are so awfully important in the entertainment industry) might not be so true anymore. This is scaring people because it could cause a domino effect. Maybe Holly Willoughby WON'T try desperately hard to lose her baby weight. Maybe Simon Cowell will STOP getting his teeth whitened every month. And maybe teenage girls will realise that having a flat stomach should not be a priority in their lives.
Maybe none of those things will happen. But all I know is that the people picking on Susan Boyle should get over themselves. Because they may think they're being big and smart, but they're absolute bullies which is not an attractive trait, and it's downright embarrassing. Even if Susan Boyle does not have a major knock-on effect like I think she deserves to have on society, I still believe that on a more personal and individual level, she has the power to change peoples' states of mind.
She gave me a reality check, that's for sure.
